Cummins Cumberland, based in Louisville, Kentucky is a service center and franchised distributor of Cummins engines and Onan power generation systems.

Cummins was formed in 1985, having grown out of the Willinger family's business in the '20s. Cummins is the world's largest independent diesel engine producer, selling almost twice as many diesels over 200 horsepower as its nearest competitor. The company credits its success to its ongoing investment in research and development and thoroughly testing engines, "for every conceivable condition you might encounter."

Two principles guide Cummins Cumberland: products you can depend on and people you can rely on.

"We help customers get the right combination of power and efficiency in an engine," said Mike Kilgore, Evansville Branch Manager. "We start with an engine analysis to determine the correct size, features and parameters for optimum performance. Our people have extensive experience in specing and installing diesel engines for all applications so you get the right power up and running right away."

Their team has worked with their engines for an average 20 years per person. "Most of our parts people are professional mechanics, and they make sure you get all the pieces you need: if you miss a gasket, the equipment is still down."

The company's computerized inventory system tracks over $10 million in Cummins and ReConŽ parts, plus new and rebuilt engines. They are linked to the national Cummins Parts Network for fast parts locating and retrieval. This reduces the need for engine conversion - they can send an engine that matches the application.

Cummins Cumberland has a Rebuilt Exchange Program with a goal of delivery to any job site within two days. They keep the most popular Rogers equipment in stock for quick delivery. "We know a quick turnaround minimizes downtime so we do all we can to deliver the right equipment quickly."

The company provides on-site service with almost 50 field vehicles ready to move 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with emergency parts and service. Cummins Cumberland carries a full line of health, safety, and environmental products for the diesel industry and the latest releases in fuel conservation packages. They have an extensive line of allied products, information systems and communications services. Rogers' engine program contract has been in place for about two years, although Cummins Cumberland did business with RGI for many years on a branch-by-branch basis. The contract covers all Cummins parts, service and engine needs at all RGI locations.

"We're putting together an equipment list for Rogers' locations so we can respond faster, and visiting sites so everyone will have a face to go along with the name."

Kilgore is impressed with RGI's Supplier Partnering Process: "This is new and exciting for us," he said. "It's exciting to work proactively with a customer who seeks out new products and constantly asks for suggestions. We'd like to see this concept spread to other customers. It's pretty visionary on Rogers' part."

Cummins has seven full service branches equipped with engine and chassis dynamometers, fuel system calibration facilities, and the latest electronic diagnostic equipment. They are located in Louisville and Hazard, KY; Nashville and Knoxville, TN; Charleston and Fairmont WV; and Evansville, IN.
