Scouts Earn Geologist Pin With Visit To Hillsboro Quarry
"Thar's GOLD in them thar hills!!!" was a popular saying when the Cub Scouts from Hillsboro Elementary visited the Hillsboro quarry on February 20. The group of fourteen boys are studying to earn their Geologist Activity Pin. What better place to learn about geology than at a rock quarry!

Scouts must meet at least 5 requirements to earn a Geologist pin, some of which are listed below:

1. Make a scale of mineral hardness for objects found at home.

2. List some geologic materials used in building your home.

3. Describe what a fossil is. Find two examples of fossils in your area.

With the help of Donnie Lankford, Southeast TN Quality Control, the boys were led through the quarry and given a vast assortment of information.

Dan Lewis, Superintendent, Randy Austin, Superintendent II, and Ann Claire Brooks, Hillsboro Scale Clerk, helped lead the tour and answer questions.

The whole group enjoyed the visit especially looking for fossils. What a disappointment it was to learn we had not struck GOLD, only PYRITE!!!
